I had intended to do a cute display based on a Disney movie called Halloween Town. It stars Debbie Reynolds, then child stars Kimberly J. Brown and Joey Zimmerman. One thing i wanted to recreate was the pumpkin statue that is in the town square at Halloween Town.
As you can see here in these two photos i have the statue reversed in size. I was lucky enough to have found a plastic lighted pumpkin at Wal-Marts for $1.79. The pumpkin is a plain orange so i decided to add some paint. If your going to paint on plastic you may want to put a base coat of a satin or mat water base varnish in order for the paint to stick.
Base coat the pumpkin Pure Black, dry brush Burnt Umber and then Pumpkin. Finish it with another coat of varnish.
The foundation for the pumpkin is made out of 3/4 inch styro for the top and bottom with a 2 inch for the center part. To get the bevel on the top and bottom pieces i just taped a strip of pressed cardboard for a straight edge (cardboard from a scratch pad will do) 1/4 inch from the top edge of the styro and half way down on the side. Next just run your hot wire along the two cardboard pieces. Base coat the styro Pure Black then dry brush Burnt Umber and Medium gray. Highlight the edges with Dolphin Gray. Finish with a varnish.
