Are your photos to dark, to light, to blurry or washed out? Here i can give you a few tips on how to take some really nice looking pictures with an average inexpensive camera. The best camera will probably be from your smart phone which i used for taking these pictures. One draw back with my camera is that it is sensitive to light so you will notice the lights from my village pieces are a bit washed out and i cant turn off my flash, but we wont be using a flash so turn yours off if you have that option. We will be using only natural light and or back lighting from a house lamp.

I find that using natural light coming in from your windows is the best lighting. To get the best effect wait until dusk to take your pictures. If it gets to dark and your flash starts working, turn it off or add some back lighting from a table lamp or ceiling light to keep it from going off.

When not using a flash at lower light your shutter will stay open longer to let in the light so you will need to keep your camera as still as possible to avoid a blurry picture. You can use a steady hand or you can get a smart phone portable tripod for about five dollars.

To get a spooky effect for my vignette i bought about six yards of Halloween material at JoAnn Fabrics. The fabric helps tone down any harsh light that might seep in. If your display is in a room that only relies on fluorescent lighting you may want to undo a few bulbs to lower the light.

The next three pictures were taken at dusk, but i did use a lot of back lighting from table lamps, just enough to keep my flash from activating. You don't want to use a flash because it washes your picture out to much and you won't get that nice rich tone.

As you can see this is the original color. Like the other signs you want to base coat the entire piece Pure Black. Make sure you paint the clip as well.

Next dry brush the entire piece a couple of coats of Burnt Umber. Do the clip inside and out also. At this point you could leave the finial and base painted the Burnt Umber. It has and old wood look to it.

Dry brush two coats of Burnt Sienna on the wood sign only. The back of the sign is blank so you can leave it black if you like. You can go three ways with the painting at this point. You could leave it like it is which looks really good or dry brush a few coats of Honeycomb to give it an Oak color. I chose to use Medium Gray.

You can see why i wanted to use Gray. Let some of the Burnt Sienna show through in places and brush a little heavy on all four corners of the wood. This really gives it a weathered look.

I decided to do another Copper base and i also did the finial, but just about any color or painting technique can be done on this. I also dry brushed silver on the clip.

You will need to do several dry brushing on the base and finial with Bayberry. Stipple Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna on the clip to make it look rusty.

I went and got another frame to try out some other painting techniques. I decided to leave the chalkboard in thinking i would want to write something on it, but my handwriting is not a thing of beauty. Thank goodness for computer art programs.

You may want to refer to my first tutorial with my step-by-step pictures when applying the paint. I had intended doing an antique painting, but it was a little hard to do. Maybe i will try it on another one.

First, base coat the entire frame and pedestal Pure Black. Next dry brush a coat or two of Burnt Umber over the frame and base. Dry brush a couple of coats of Burnt Sienna on the frame and filigree only. Now dry brush a couple of coats of Honeycomb on the filigree only. Notice how well it balances out the colors and frame.

I commented on how much i like using metallic paints. Here on the base i dry brushed a Metallic Pure Gold. Although it's gold, it has more of a brass look to it when dry brushed over black. Notice how much black i let show through. This gives it more of an antiqued look to it. You want to hit the high spots the heaviest with the gold and let your brush bristles feather it into the crevasses.

Last comes my printed out sign. This one will match my Helga's House of Fortunes display.

Here is an interesting item i found at Micheal's Crafts. It's a chalkboard pedestal sign usually used as table menus, table placements at weddings or just a decorative home accent.

I popped out the chalkboard and replaced it with my Witches Spells menu. Although the aged white looks nice, i am going to repaint it to match the candlestick.

I have seen many of these on the internet in different styles including a back-lit candle picture frame.

You want to start by base coating the pedestal and frame black, front and back. This piece can be painted in many variations. As you can see in this picture the frame looks like wood as well as the filigree so i will be painting it a dark oak color. The base will be a metallic copper with a green patina.

Now start your dry bushing with Folk Art Burnt Umber over the whole frame and base. This will take away the harshness of the black base coat.

Lets bring the wood frame to life. I dry brushed only the frame and filigree two coats of Burnt Sienna. Normally i would dry brush a beige color like Honeycomb for accent, but i want the wood to look dark. The black base coat showing through the wood grain will enhance the the Burnt Sienna.

Now lets start having some fun with the base. I really like working with the Folk Art Metallic paints for accents. Dry brush a couple of coats of Metallic Copper. Also you will notice i dry brushed the little beads around the inner frame with Copper as well.

The fun part is adding a patina to the Copper. I dry brushed about three coats of Folk Art Bayberry. It's a light green when applied to the copper gives it that tarnished green patina. Add some Bayberry to the beads on the inner frame as well.

If you don't want to much patina, try using a painters paint sponge and daub it on in random areas. As always I enjoy adding props to my displays. For my backdrop I found this cool vintage reproduction sign of the Harvest Moon Brand Soups. You can get this sign at http://www.kpcreek.com for $10.99. Also the battery operated candles are available in a veriety of colors, styles and sizes there as well. The three star stands I got at http://www.thecountrystore.com. The berry branches at the top of the display and around the candle cups are candle rings you can get at your local craft store.

To get the marshy look for the building base i used the scraping technique by scraping the surface of the styrofoam with a steak knife. I then applied the base with a layer of Earth Blend Turf T1350 purchased at http://www.woodlandscenics.com. You can get this at any hobby store as well. The wire fence posts are sculpted out of Balsa Wood. The wire is the green floral wire painted silver.

For the potions drawers (in which i misspelled potions on one of the labels) i created ingredient labels on my computer. Using my Hot Wire Foam Factory Hot Knife i burned the edges of the paper to give it an aged look. You could use a fine tip soldering iron or wood burner as well. If you have been designing displays for some time you may have heard the term 'Happy Accidents'. These are things that happen to your display that you never intended to do, but it comes out looking really great. In my case the lettering and graphics were meant to be printed in black, but my ink ran out and came out in a faded gray with a little bit of a faded red boarder. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I had intended to do a cute display based on a Disney movie called Halloween Town. It stars Debbie Reynolds, then child stars Kimberly J. Brown and Joey Zimmerman. One thing i wanted to recreate was the pumpkin statue that is in the town square at Halloween Town.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As you can see here in these two photos i have the statue reversed in size. I was lucky enough to have found a plastic lighted pumpkin at Wal-Marts for $1.79. The pumpkin is a plain orange so i decided to add some paint. If your going to paint on plastic you may want to put a base coat of a satin or mat water base varnish in order for the paint to stick.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Base coat the pumpkin Pure Black, dry brush Burnt Umber and then Pumpkin. Finish it with another coat of varnish.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The foundation for the pumpkin is made out of 3/4 inch styro for the top and bottom with a 2 inch for the center part. To get the bevel on the top and bottom pieces i just taped a strip of pressed cardboard for a straight edge (cardboard from a scratch pad will do) 1/4 inch from the top edge of the styro and half way down on the side. Next just run your hot wire along the two cardboard pieces. Base coat the styro Pure Black then dry brush Burnt Umber and Medium gray. Highlight the edges with Dolphin Gray. Finish with a varnish.
child's educational toy, but who would have known that it could be used
for other things like a village display.

It is about twelve
inches in diameter that comes with a remote with several settings
including on/off, manual moon phase or auto moon phase. It will also
shut off after one half hour of inactivity. Several stores including

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Why base coat? Base coating is the essential part of your project especially when using the dry brush technique on your styrofoam and wood products. Most acrylic paints are opaque especially the Ceramcoat products. Even though the FolkArt paints have a more denser consistency they will still take on the hue of the base coat.
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
When painting your styro that represents stone, cement, wood or other natural objects you want to give your project a realistic look. So lets pick a material like wood bark on a tree. When you look at the bark you will naturally see the various colors like light brown, dark brown, rust, dark green, grey and your last color will be black. If you look at the bark up close you will see these colors not only on the surface, but also in the cracks of the wood. Because the human eye can only focus in so much that the further away from the bark the darker those cracks in the bark are going to get and eventually the human eye will only identify the colors as black. So this is why it is essential to use a dark base coat to represent the natural and realistic look of your material.

This being said, rule of thumb when dry brushing is going from dark to light. Although this rule can be broken when doing an antique look by reversing the process. Dry brushing is basically a technique used by ceramic painters and crafters. You apply your base coat usually a black or dark brown. Next you will load your brush up with a lighter color then you will wipe it of a little on a paper towel. Lightly brush over the surface of your project until you have a thin layer with a little bit of your base coat showing through. Repeat this process with the rest of your colors progressively going lighter.

There are two base coats that i use all the time for my projects. Black for Halloween and Burnt Umber for Christmas.

To get an idea how your colors will look against a base coat apply a small sample of white and a small sample of black on a scrap piece of styro. Next dry brush Christmas red or red on both samples. You will see that the red will have a bright vibrant effect on the white sample while the red on the black will have a darker and richer hue.

Why base coat when you are going to cover your work with all those colors? When you apply a coat of mat or satin varnish to your paint you will bring out all those colors including the base coat which will give your project depth. Experiment with your colors with a base coat and see what best fits your project.

Here are my basic colors when i dry brush my project especially when i am doing cement and cobblestone carvings on my styro.

For Halloween: base coat Black, dry brush: Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna and Honeycomb or Country Twill or any beige color for accent. Last apply a varnish.

For Christmas omit the black base coat and replace with Raw Umber.

For a cement look base coat Black then dry brush Burnt Umber and then Med. Grey or Dolphin Grey.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This project is very easy to do. If you stay with it you can get this
done in a day. This is a mini tutorial in which you will need to refer
to my perfect straight cut tutorial on my Christmas blog link located on
this blog.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
To make this Spooky Wall you will need two inch
styrofoam, one box of the Dept.56 Spooky Wrought Iron Fence, one bottle
each of FolkArt Acrylic paint including Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna,
Honeycomb or Tumbleweed, Med. Grey and Black. Also a bottle of Mat or
Satin Varnish.

We will start by cutting out the basic shapes of
the wall. Short pillar is 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 3-1/2 in.. Tall pillar is
1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 4-1/2 in.. Wall section is 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 6 in.. Base is 3/4 x 1-3/4 x 8-3/4 in.. Make
sure that when you cut your wall section that you run your hot wire on
the outside of your mark. Remember that your wire will melt about a 3/32
of an inch from your styro so you want to make sure your wall section is
exactly the same length as your two wrought iron fences put together. At this time DO NOT GLUE your pieces together.

Start carving your detail using your hot wire sculpting knife. Draw a line 1/4 inch down from the tops of your pillars and wall section to create a cement cap. Burn a line on all sides just below your lines using a metal ruler.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">After i have carved out my cobblestone i like to randomly remove pieces of my cobblestone giving the wall a worn and battered look. After you finish carving your details you can now glue your pieces together. I usually let my project dry over night to make sure they are bonded well, but you may be able to start painting after you let the glue set for about two to four hours.

Now start applying two coats of black on the entire wall. Once it dries, touch up any white spots that you see. Don't worry if you miss some spots. I have learned that when you apply your varnish it will make your other colors bleed a little which will help fill in those areas.
